Trong buổi lễ Thượng kỳ VNCH đầu năm Nhâm Thìn tại tiền đình thành phố San Jose do Lực Lượng Sĩ Quan Thủ Đức San Jose tổ chức, ứng cử viên nghị viên khu vực 4 Trương Tâm được mời tham dự và lên diễn đàn chúc Tết đồng hương, trong khi đó cũng có sự tham dự của nghị viên đương nhiệm khu vực 4 Kansen Chu, khiến cho Ô. Kansen Chu buồn lòng,không vui và sau đó về văn phòng gửi Email than phiền với Phó Thị Trưởng Madison Nguyễn, một trong những vị dân cử đồng bảo trợ cho buổi lễ này.

The great thing about spats at San Jose City Hall is that they often are much ado about very little. Take the kerfuffle that occurred Monday during the ceremonial Vietnamese New Year flag-raising inside the rotunda. Among the folks introduced to the crowd was Tam Truong, a Vietnamese-American San Jose police detective who is challenging incumbent Kansen Chu for City Council in Berryessa's District 4.

Truong, 30, seen as an ally of Mayor Chuck Reed, who in his first term as mayor had backed Chu's challenger for the council seat, got up and wished everyone a happy new year, mentioning that he was a candidate. Mild stuff, but it irritated Chu, who attended the ceremony with other council members. State law bars use of public resources to promote political campaigns.

Suggesting that line had been crossed, Chu fired off an email to Vice Mayor Madison Nguyen, who co-sponsored the flag-raising with Reed. Nguyen fired back, playing the female card as she noted that she was only a co-sponsor of the event. "You are willing to attack women and not a man when something like this happens," she wrote. "You sent this not as a way of trying to avoid this in the future, but as an attempt to generate publicity. Both of these reasons are unfortunate."
